When it's time to winterize the RV, I usually drain everything and put RV antifreeze in the drains. I thought I had the routine covered ...until old man winter taught me to check every drain twice.

I missed the shower drain.

The water left in the drain froze and cracked the drain pipe. When the weather warmed up and I used the shower again, I discovered the leak. It was a frustrating reminder that one small, easy-to-overlook spot can lead to a repair.

Since then, I've made the shower drain a specific item on my winterizing checklist. I don't rely on memory alone, especially at my age! I go through the RV one drain at a time and make sure each one is handled.

If you winterize your own RV, take a few minutes to check the shower drain along with the sinks and other plumbing. Follow your RV owner's manual and use RV antifreeze as directed. A written checklist can help you catch the little things before the freezing weather does. I learned this lesson the hard way ...winterizing isn't finished until every drain has been checked.
